In the project “In Between Space”, I set out to explore the progressive shift of my identity
through the intersectionality of cultures, beliefs, and societies. Through the subtle contrasts
between the social projections of me versus my own reflections of my identity, the project sheds light upon the degree of influence social expectations and pressures may exert upon a person’s understanding of their place in the world. In this essay, I continue to analyze some of the key influencers at work that come to shape ways of my identity searching in a multiverse world. Some of them derive from the social roles(49 Blaine) being forcefully assigned to me and the stereotypes(45) being attached to me based on nationality, belief, and skin color, while others relate to society’s prejudice(4 Glotfelter) and stigmas(1 Balsam) towards specific groups of people. Identifying these influencers have not only helped me understand my relationship with the different social spaces around me, but also helped me in gaining perspective upon other identities and their struggles to find a place “in between space”. Finally, the essay ends on a hopeful note as I come to acknowledge the complex layers that make up the society’s perception of me, but at the same time set out to break these boundaries in finding my own space among the clamours of many spaces.
